Frank’s has become a popular gourmet dessert cafe in Itaewon because of its signature Rainbow Roll Cake. The cake is made twice a day with 100% natural ingredients and is filled with Earl Grey cream. It is a thing of beauty. Looking at it makes you want to eat it and the reputation behind it has your expectations set very high.
I am a lover of Earl Grey tea and it is my favorite go to for black teas. So, naturally I ordered a cup of Earl Grey tea for me and my friend, Sydney to have with the cake. We were lucky that we had gotten the last roll cake, since we heard it sells out pretty quickly. We cut it in half and the rich colors and the cream looked promising. Needless to say, we were excited to eat it.
When we both took a bite of the cake, there were some disappointments. Moreso on my end. The cream only had a slight hint of Earl Grey and the cake itself didn’t have much flavor. It was unfortunately on the bland side and kind of dry. Sydney loved the cream, but I wanted more of the Earl Grey flavor. It wasn’t the star as it should have been and it would have made up for the lack of flavor in the cake itself. The texture of the cake was fluffy, so the cream and the cake melded together smoothly, but the satisfaction for me still wasn’t there. Yes, I loved the texture it had with each bite, but it was not enough for me.
The cake was beautiful and fluffy, but it lacked flavor overall. There is a lot of hype surrounding this cake, but I don’t think it is justified. I wouldn’t go back again for the cake. It wasn’t worth paying about $12, but I am interested to try their other deserts.
