Wondering how American democracy has gotten to this point? In seven short chapters, an introduction, and epilogue, Zachary Roth, national reporter for MSNBC, offers a comprehensive look at how Republicans have strategized for elections to tip in their favor and the corruption that has been embedded in our political culture.

It was very clear that the conservative party had a strong dislike towards President Obama and his progressive ideas. They wanted him to fail and they wanted to take back the White House. During Obama’s presidency, we saw the shift of power go from being a Democratic majority to Republican majority. The conservative leaders had a plan, stuck with it, and it worked in the end. They created a guerilla that was seemingly under the radar to the public, ended decades of work towards political equality, and worked heavily towards ensuring that Americans didn’t have an equal say in the political process.

Red states, backed by corporate lobby groups, cracked down on the rights of cities and counties when they tried to pass progressive laws that benefited their citizens. There has been a war on local democracy. State laws have been passed that undermine the power of local governments. Not only this, they used gerrymandering and have passed voting laws that discriminated against minorities in order for elections to tip in their favor for the next 10 years. There have been courts that have blocked some of the laws passed, but they have continuously found loop holes in order to still get what they want.

Roth, goes into detail and explains why certain things in our government has been happening. He explains why Republicans won’t tax the wealthy (they get most of their funding from the top 1%), why there is an increase of voter restrictions, how the wealthy has gained more influence in politics, and how the First Amendment went from being a “protector of oppressed minorities…to an enabler of politically engaged billionaires.”

There has been this continuous fight towards equality and being able to keep and use our rights, but because of the power hungry, we are left with our voices being shut out and shut down. Politics is no longer about what is best for the people. It’s about who has the most money and the most power. The Republicans saw their end and the Democrats got too comfortable. Powers have shifted and now we are in a dangerous situation that is going to cause the United States government to crash and most likely start a world war, but it has also united the American people and the world in a way it has never done before. The American people want to be protected, they want equality, they want their voices to be heard, they want their rights to be acknowledged and respected, they want peace, they want unity. They do not want hate, discrimination or their views to be overlooked and neglected. Being afraid and silent is no longer an option.
