Captive Rebel

Author: Erin McDermott
Year: 2017
Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction & Dystopian
Pages: 169

Erin McDermott’s novel is set in a post-war stricken world where people have gone back to praying to the gods, mainly Poseidon, Zeus and Hades. Marylyn, a rebel spy, struggles with her loyalty to the rebels in order to see her parents again and her loyalty to the Allegiance prince, Ariston, after connecting with him after learning of their shared tortured pasts.

McDermott did an excellent job in displaying Marylyn’s emotions on the page and her journey in learning the difference between those who are good and those who are evil, no matter what side they are on. Though romance is a heavy influence on this novel, it is done in the way that actually moves the story forward and sets up for later novels.

I did enjoy Marylyn’s witty and sarcastic personality, her selflessness when it comes to protecting and wanting to help others, and her strength. Even though she can be irrational at times and understandably so in some instances, she doesn’t allow anyone or anything to break down her protective spirit.

There are a few areas where the writing can be a bit confusing and may need a little more editing, but overall, I am excited to read the next book and continue being part of Marylyn’s journey to find her parents and the other characters’ journey on finding where they belong in this war among lands and gods.
